Build a Tower Build a Team - Tom Wujec
What problems could a Marshmallow have you say? In what scenarios do Kindergartners consistently perform better than most adult groups?
- Specialized Skills + Facilitation Skills = Success
- Teams of CEO’s plus an Executive Assistant perform above the average of teams with CEO’s alone.
This is fascinating stuff - I’m always looking for that Ta-Da moment but usually ending up with the Uh-Oh moment unfortunately! I wonder how many people who attempt team building exercises really get to the point of the exercise - to try, test and attempt more prototypes?
I think we’ve not only become trained to look for one right answer - thinking linearly when looking at projects - but now have become trained to expect a social / psychological evaluation when participating in team building exercises. The jockeying for position, who’s in charge, who’s the facilitator. Not realizing at the end that all positions are equally important and contribute to the success of the team.
Putting it simply - specialized skills are necessary for success, but cannot succeed without a facilitator (or at least won’t be as successful).
